Planning a wedding at home

So you’re thinking of having your wedding at home or perhaps a relative’s home? There are many reasons why this can be extremely fulfilling. Perhaps it’s a place filled with many sentimental memories or somewhere you won’t be restricted by catering choice or time limitations. Whatever your reasons the logistics of planning a wedding at home should be carefully considered before making this decision.

Parking

You’ll need to ensure you can facilitate enough parking for all your guests and suppliers. With the weather occasionally being unpredictable you should also ensure the ground is prepped accordingly.

Access

Consider where your guests and more specifically your suppliers will gain access to the location. If you are opting for a marquee the company will need to be able manoeuvre a lorry as close as possible to the garden or field. This also will be the case for your other suppliers including caterers.

The Ground

The ground needs to be as flat as possible to allow for a hard floor which is preferable in my opinion. and I would always recommend this. If this isn’t possible then there are other options but these can prove more expensive.

Your Suppliers

Unlike a venue you will need to consider additional suppliers such as power, toilets, furniture, catering. Selecting your supplier team is crucial to the success and smooth running of your day. Your chosen experts will be able to advise and recommend on your requirements especially if you have a wedding planner. As well as accessibility your suppliers will also require a private space to take breaks and leave their possessions. I’d recommend not using your house for this and instead an outbuilding or even a small extension to your marquee would be ideal.

The Marquee

There are many different types and styles of marquees you can consider. The option you go for will depend on cost as well as the look and feel you want your wedding to have. Perhaps you’re looking for a quintessential country garden feel or would you rather a more glamourous event? There is a style for every occasion so ensure you do your research and look into different options and companies.

Ceremony

Your ceremony will be made even more special by having your wedding at home. However, as you won’t legally be able to marry at home you should decide when and where you will do this. Perhaps a local church ceremony before heading back home for the reception or instead you could opt to have a blessing outside in the garden and have an official private ceremony at a registry office another time. There are many options but logistics should be considered in your choice.

With so much to consider when planning a wedding at home it’s likely to take more time than at a wedding venue. Therefore hiring a wedding planner to recommend suppliers, keep you on track, offer advice, coordinate your day and so much more is truly worth it.
